4. Cybrary Man's Educational Web Sites

·      Classroom organization can be successful when the physical environment is safe and well constructed. Everything from desks to working spaces for both teachers and students and storage for materials, are considered when dealing with the organization of a classroom.

  •          Jerry Blumengarten, who taught various subjects, for 32 years, in New York City, created Cybrary Man. Out of the four websites I researched, Cybrary was the only one that had sections for all stakeholders in education (educators, students and parents). This stood out to me because it truly takes active participation from all to ensure academic and social success in students. Parents are given advice on how to handle bullying, poverty and the effect of violence, TV and radio, on the youth. This is while students gain knowledge on their schoolwork, homework help and educational games. Educators are provided with resources such as lesson plans, managing, arranging and organizing a classroom and how to set up a classroom.

Examples that Support Successful Learning Environments:
  •   Cybrary initially suggests contacting administrators and janitors, before putting and acting on a plan for the classroom. This is important because you need to know your limits before acting on them.
  •   Ask other teachers for help. Cooperative learning should not be limited to students.
  •   Create a blueprint of what you want your room to look like
  •         Cybrary offers tips on how to redesign a classroom and what to think about when setting up a successful learning environment.

I enjoyed that Cybrary took into consideration letting school administrators know when a teacher plans to change up their classroom. Sometimes, educators get so worked up in what could be, because of the countless assumed possibilities, but forget to do their research first.

3. PreKinders

Classroom activities assist students with learning because they are acquiring knowledge and information. Here, they are also making use of their problem solving and critical thinking skills, from what they discover, through curiosity and inquiry.

  •         Karen Cox, who has been a preschool teacher, in both public and private schools, for the past 14 years, designed PreKinders.com. Cox created this website for teachers who wished to educate preschool students. Lessons on math and language, gross and fine motor skills and ideas from Cox are available on the website for both preschool and kindergarten teachers to explore.

·           Examples that Support Successful Learning Environments:

  •  Cox has 10 interest areas in her classroom that both supports and encourages learning.
  •  The interest areas include: blocks, art, sensory, science, writing, reading, literacy, math and computer centers.
  •   Prop boxes are used to store the materials for each center.

  •         While viewing pictures, I noticed that although Cox’s walls are painted white, she was still able to bring forth  color, and interest, into her classroom. The interest areas come in various sizes but each center offers a sufficient amount of space for students to explore and act on their curiosity. I love how she was able to make her classroom come to life, because I work in a very similar environment. We may not have paint on our walls, to make the room “pop” but we decorate them, with student work and other pieces of art. The ten interest areas may be limited in space, to some, but for the students, they are give a sense of control by learning how to work within their limits.
